What Is Bespoke Interior Décor?
February 12, 2025
What does it mean when we describe an interior décor project as bespoke? By virtue of the fact that someone has hired an interior design professional, one would think that automatically makes the room or home bespoke. False :).
There are designers who, dare I say, have a ‘formula’ and are delighted to repeat that formula over and over again. I’m not saying this is wrong. Depending on a client’s stage of life and needs, this may work perfectly for them. Typically this formula would include off the shelf, retail furnishings and possibly even some custom products combined to deliver that designer’s “look”. It is predictable in that the design approach is aimed at conforming the space to the designer’s specific vision and not necessarily the architecture of the home or particular needs of the client. This isn’t necessarily wrong, it just isn’t bespoke.
If you have reached the stage of life where you are ready to feel truly nurtured in your forever home, and have the means to make it uniquely yours, then bespoke décor is for you. But what does “bespoke” mean exactly?
For our clients, it begins with a very deep dive into their needs, how they use the space, who shares it with them, and any specific requests or functions they have for it. Our team buckles down to create a space plan and conceptual design for their approval. This first stage is to ensure their particular likes, needs and desires are understood within the context of their home’s overall architecture and style.
To create their bespoke home, we work with local trades, manufacturers, craftspeople, vintage sellers and artists. The overall design direction is our clients’ and only theirs. It will marry nicely with their architecture while speaking to their specific likes and needs. Rather than shoehorn in an off-the-shelf piece of furniture, a vintage or custom designed piece may work better. While not every item needs to be custom designed in order for home décor to be bespoke, the ability to create the perfect piece of furniture, rug or lighting is a luxury worth considering.
Some examples of luxurious bespoke elements are:
A hand painted mural or special wallpaper may add a layer of sophistication and interest that paint alone lacks.
Custom drapery in the perfect pattern, material and style to add warmth, privacy and light control to a home.
Original art in various media, that speaks to our client and moves them each time they enter their home.
Custom designed lighting with hand blown glass and hand forged metal can act as art within the room.
A custom designed wool or silk rug can add warmth, colour, and personality to a bland space.
The end result is a home unlike any other, with the most carefully designed pieces that quietly share our clients’ story and nurture them through the next phase of life. This is where memories are made and joyous moments shared.
There is nothing common, disposable, or expected in a bespoke design. This is sustainable design at its best, with pieces that will bring joy for years to come.
So, if you’ve dreamed of a bespoke interior for your forever home, you’re in the right place. Are you ready to experience a beautifully furnished and decorated home that is also highly functional? Fill out a project inquiry form. We’d love to help.
