Some homes are finished. This one was always becoming.

Hillside Classic sits in Northumberland County surrounded by the kind of views that make you stop mid-sentence. The clients — art collectors, nature lovers, parents and grandparents — had been living with a home that worked but hadn’t yet caught up to who they had become. The rooms were fine. Fine is what they were done with.

The open-concept main floor called for a gentle neutral foundation. We chose Benjamin Moore French Canvas throughout, grounding every room in warmth without competing with the views or the art. On the kitchen island, a quiet hit of blue-green — Benjamin Moore Porch Swing — introduced just enough colour to feel intentional without feeling loud. Furnishings followed in cream and caramel tones, layered to feel collected rather than coordinated.

This was a home designed to hold a large family and hold it well. Every seating decision, every fabric choice, every piece of furniture was tested against a simple question: will this work when all three generations are here at once? The answer had to be yes — and it had to look effortless.

Just sitting with all the lamps on, chatting, and it’s truly a masterpiece what you accomplished! Thank you so very much!”

The view through the full-height windows is incredible — so we didn’t want to detract from it. We wanted everything to feel like it belonged to the landscape.

What makes this project personal is the art. The clients’ collection is not decorative — it is part of who they are. Every placement was considered not just for scale and proportion but for how a piece would be seen from different vantage points throughout the day. A painting that catches morning light from the kitchen. A sculpture that anchors the sightline from the entry. The art was here before us, and the decorating was built to honour it.

The result is a home that feels both calm and rich — warm neutrals, natural light, and the kind of quiet confidence that comes from knowing every decision was made for a reason. It is a country home that doesn’t try to be anything other than exactly what its family needs. Which, as it turns out, is the most sophisticated thing a home can do.
