Time to Cozy Up Our Homes

November 10, 2025

Now that we’ve turned back the clocks and the colder weather is setting in here in Ontario, it’s time to think about how to cozy up our homes for the winter. Think about your environment within the framework of your five senses.

Let’s begin with the obvious:

  1. Pull out your chunky winter throws and put away the summer linen & cotton throws.

  2. Replace the light weight cushion covers with heavier warmer fabric covers.

  3. In the bedroom, put away the cotton blankets, and bring out the down duvets.

In addition to those basics, there are some other things you can do. If they aren’t already, put all of your lamps and sconces on a dimmer (preferably one that you can control from your phone or a remote). Gently reducing ambient light helps you wind down at the end of the day. If you enjoy candlelight, how about some natural beeswax candles to add to the mood? Also, if your art doesn’t have a picture light above it, now is the time to illuminate it.

Use scent to add a cozy feeling. I’m a fan of natural scents, whether essential oils, or simply the smell of baked goods. I supposed the idea of baked goods could extend to your sense of taste :).

Even though your outdoor garden has been put to bed, keep some greenery indoors in the form of houseplants or seasonal florals. I have accumulated quite an orchid collection indoors!

If you haven’t already invested in custom drapery, this is definitely the time to do it. It can add literal warmth by regulating the temperature and reducing drafts. The same holds true for including a great area rug.

Finally, a great playlist never hurt anyone. Personally, I will always have some Wild Rivers tunes playing in any season.

After a brisk chilly walk, coming in to a warm fireside chair and enjoying a great book sounds blissful. Or, how about a board game with loved ones by the fire? While we may grow tired of the cold by the time February rolls around, right now let’s embrace the change of season and level up the details to allow us to enjoy the cozy vibes.
