Your laundry room can do more than laundry

May 13, 2025

Well, that’s not exactly true. The room isn’t doing the laundry, just providing the facilities for you to do it! If you are fortunate enough to have adequate square footage, your laundry room can serve you in many more ways than just doing laundry.

We spend a lot of time in the laundry room, whether we like it or not. For this reason, it’s as important to design this space well as it is some of the more public spaces in your home. It should not only be highly functional but also beautiful, calm and welcoming.

When thinking about function in this hard working room, you needn’t stop at laundry. In this recent remodel of a second floor laundry room, one end of the room is a ‘business centre’, housing a copier, office supplies and filing.

The other end is, of course, a laundry pair and sink, complete with custom hanging rod and original art.

Along the north side of the room is pantry storage and upper cabinetry that holds beverages. By raising the counter height to fit the laundry pair, we even created adequate storage below for window screens to be stored off season.

Because this particular laundry room is on the second floor in the centre of the house, the decor and style needed to compliment and connect to the surrounding rooms. A similar neutral palette with greige and soft teal accents lets this room blend seamlessly with the neighbouring rooms.

If you are considering a laundry room remodel, perhaps also consider what other pain points you have in your home. Is it possible for you to create a room that does double or even triple duty? As always, some careful thought and planning, ahead of doing the work, will pay off for years to come.
